OTHERS DON'T DETERMINE SUCCESS
YOU DO
Growing up, Derrick saw himself as another kid who wanted a better life and knew sports, in particular, football would serve as a vehicle to a better life. After growing up with much adversity, he began working towards shifting his perspective from a temporary experience of playing on the field to a permanent purpose of serving those who currently and formerly played sports. Today, Derrick travels across the United States sharing his story with the hope of empowering others to never to yield when facing adversity. He is a proud graduate of the University of Tennesse where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Legal Studies and his Masters of Science degree in Sports Psychology.
Testimonials
In this book, Derrick Furlow Jr. draws on his own personal experiences in addressing the important topic of transition- in sport, in business, and in life. In addition, he offers readers a faith-based approach for effectively managing the many and varied demands of the transition experience.
I got “What’s Next?” How to Transition like a Champion at just the right time, I was coming off of an Olympics where I won two gold medals and the world championships where I won bronze and I had begun to think about what I would do next as my goals in sport have largely been accomplished. Derrick’s book helped me focus on marrying my platform with skills I acquired in sport, and things I’m passionate outside of sport and gave me logical steps to start building a new game plan. This book was the catalyst for my stepping out into a new arena with not nearly the amount of anxiety or fear I would have had if I hadn’t read it first!
Derrick has been a good friend since we played sports in college at UT, but the last couple of years, he’s become my mentor. He’s my go-to for business related questions, and his advice and hard-earned wisdom have changed how I’ve approached life as a self-employed woman. I was ready to quit my dream of running my own business and settle for a 9-5 job until a two hour meeting with him that changed my life last year. Now, I’m thinking outside the box and taking advantage of multiple streams of income with confidence instead of fear – still living my dream job – and providing for my family.
